License Based on Equivalency

The Wisconsin License Based on Equivalency (LBE): Standards-based Assessment pathway to licensure is for people with demonstrated teaching experience directly related to the license they are seeking. The pathway is intended for people who have a bachelor’s degree, and have not completed an educator preparation program recognized for Wisconsin licensure.

To obtain licensure through this pathway, work directly with one of these providers. Complete all the requirements of the program you choose. The program will assist you to complete the application materials for licensure.

License Based on Equivalency (LBE) by Wisconsin DPI

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is an approved provider for licensure in this pathway. Our program is called: License Based on Equivalency (LBE).

Wisconsin DPI LBE is intended for:

  • private school teachers with 3 years of teaching experience; or
  • educators with 3 years of teaching experience who completed an alternative route preparation program outside of Wisconsin; or
  • educators with a combination of 3 years of teaching experience in PK-12, postsecondary, and/or industry

During the process, applicants compile a portfolio of evidence to substantiate competency in the Wisconsin educator standards directly related to the license they are seeking.

To apply for a license through LBE:

  1. Review the LBE Handbook to determine eligibility and learn about the requirements for LBE
  2. Apply for Part One: Eligibility Review using license application form PI 1602 ER and employment verification form PI 1613. Continue to use the LBE Handbook throughout the process. You may also need to complete a Major Equivalent Worksheet during Part One: Eligibility Review. If needed, locate the appropriate worksheet from the list below.
  3. Wait for a verification letter from the DPI. Upon successful completion of Part One: Eligibility Review, you will be notified to proceed to Part Two: Portfolio Review.
  4. Apply for Part Two: Portfolio Review using license application form PI 1602 PR and the Dispositions Survey. Continue to use the LBE Handbook throughout the process. Complete all the testing requirements for the license and submit test results as part of the portfolio.
