Applying for a License/Permit

The DPI no longer accepts paper application forms for educator licenses. Our Educator Licensing Online (ELO) system is being phased in, with many types of licenses made available in January 2014.  Professional, renewal, and most substitute license application functionality will be offered in late March 2014.  We are aware that the phasing in process may cause inconveniences to school districts and educators. Please return to this website periodically for additional updates on the new system.

In order to apply for a license or permit issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), a complete license application must be submitted by all applicants.

To avoid delay in processing your application, please submit a complete application. Incomplete applications cannot be processed. Applicants who submit an incomplete application will be notified of the specific errors or omissions. Applicants should promptly respond with all necessary information to complete the application.

Please review the page of supplemental materials or forms needed before applying for a license.
